NGO frowns over rising poverty among Nigerians
‘Push Africa’, a Non Governmental Organisation (NGO) expressed worries over excessive poverty among Nigerians and charged leaders to address it.
Mrs Doris Egberemen, the founder of the organisation stated this while addressing newsmen on Friday in Damaturu.
She said their initiative tagged “Do-one-thing campaign” was designed to advocate and support the Nigerian government’s effort to reduce the number of poor people in the country by half by the year 2030.
“A key objective of the campaign is to focus the attention of prospective leaders who are aspiring for various political offices, to pay attention to the increasing number of poor people in the country.”, she said.
She added that one of the key component of the campaign was to create a platform where Nigerians most hit by poverty can tell their own stories as it affects them.
“This is to demonstrate the depth and harsh realities they live with. ”, he said.
Pointed out that poverty was linked to inadequate nutrition and food insecurity, lack of access to health care and basic education, Insecurity, unsafe neighborhoods among others.
Egberemen therefore called on all political leaders, development partners, media organisations, members of the public and other stakeholders to support the campaign
