No fewer than 100 youths from across Yobe were trained on citizen reporting and the strategic use of social media to promote good governance.

The training was organised by Neptune Prime Limited in collaboration with the Wole Soyinka Centre for Investigative Journalism on Thursday in Potiskum.

Dr Hassan Gimba, publisher of Neptune Prime, urged participants to see the workshop as a springboard for civic responsibility and engagement.

“This training was designed to equip you with tools that can bring real change.

“You are now ambassadors of responsible communication. Speak up against disinformation and use your content to advocate for better governance and civic participation,” Gimba said.

He encouraged the youths to take active roles in political discourse as the 2027 general elections approach.

“Ask questions, analyse manifestos, and use your platforms to drive issues, not division. You are the bridge between policy and the people,” he added.

Participants at the event later resolved to establish the Yobe Digital Advocacy Network, aimed at coordinating campaigns for transparency, good governance and voter awareness, especially in underserved communities.

Prof. Ahmed Bedu, who facilitated a key session, challenged attendees to leverage social media as a tool for civic enlightenment rather than misinformation.

“Social media is not just a platform for sharing news; it is a battleground for narratives.

“Use your platforms to highlight good leadership, expose wrongdoing and promote voter education,” he said.

He reminded the participants that they do not need to be employed by news organisations to report facts, stating: “You are already journalists in your capacity.”

Also speaking, Malam Abubakar Ahmed, a retired Deputy Director of the News Agency of Nigeria, urged the youths to shift their focus from trivial online content to purposeful digital storytelling.

“Stop using your data only for gossip or entertainment. Use your digital presence to share stories of courage, injustice and progress.

“Social media can enlighten and mobilise communities when used with purpose,” he advised.

News Agency of Nigeria reports that the one-day workshop is part of ongoing efforts to foster a digitally conscious and politically active youth population in the state.
