Maidawa Arewa Media Launches 5-Year Strategic Plan in Damaturu
By Ahmed Abba
Maidawa Arewa Media, a regional online news platform, on Sunday launched its five-year strategic plan in Damaturu, Yobe State.
Speaking at the launch, the CEO/Editor-in-Chief, Wadzani Apagu, said the platform was born out of the need for reliable and in-depth reportage of events in the North-east, particularly after the devastating Boko Haram attack on Damaturu in 2014.
Apagu said the attack highlighted the shortcomings of mainstream media in adequately reporting the impact of such incidents on the affected communities.
“Maidawa Arewa was established to fill this gap and provide a platform for local voices to be heard,” she said.
Mal. Musa Usman Konduga, a lecturer at the Department of Mass Communication, University of Maiduguri, emphasised the role of mass media in community development.
He urged media organisations to promote peace and development through awareness campaigns, particularly through radio, which is widely accessible in the region.
Alhaji Abdullahi Bego, the Yobe State Commissioner for Home Affairs, Information and Culture, congratulated Maidawa Arewa Media and encouraged them to persevere despite the challenges.
He urged youths in the region to embrace responsible journalism and support emerging media organisations like Maidawa Arewa.
DSP Dungus Abdulkarim, the Police Public Relations Officer, Yobe State Command, commended the leadership of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) Yobe Council for moderating the media space effectively in the state.
The NUJ Chairman, Comrade Rajab Muhammed, expressed his appreciation to the CEO of Maidawa Arewa for introducing the platform to the region.
