The North-East Development Commission (NEDC), in collaboration with the Yobe State Government, has commenced a five-day training workshop on Effective Teaching and Learning Techniques and Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics, and Agriculture (STEMA) for 200 basic education teachers in Yobe.
The training, organised by Yalaye Nigeria Limited, is being held at the Umar Suleiman College of Education, Gashua from May 26th to 30th, 2024.
Malam Abubakar Sadiq Bulama, representing NEDC’s Scholarship, Training, and Capacity Building Unit, stated that the commission was established to rehabilitate, reconstruct, and reintegrate the Northeast region, which has suffered from low literacy rates and poor school enrolment due to insurgency.
“The NEDC is committed to providing access to quality education by building the capacity of teachers across the zone. We have already trained 300 teachers in the first phase, and now we are training 200 more in Yobe North, bringing the total to 600 across the six Northeast states,” he said.
Bulama urged participants to pay attention, acquire new skills, and impact their students positively. “Our target is to train 100,000 teachers across the region,” he added.
Dr. Muhammed Machina, the Lead Consultant of Yalaye Nigeria Limited, disclosed that the company was selected after a rigorous screening process.
“This training focuses on 100 teachers in STEMA and another 100 in effective teaching methodologies. It is designed to be exciting, educating, and highly beneficial for participants, who are expected to transfer the knowledge to their students,” he explained.
He expressed gratitude to the NEDC and Yobe State Government for the opportunity.
Dr. AbdulRahman Danladi, the Provost of Umar Suleiman College of Education, Gashua, described the workshop as part of NEDC’s efforts to revitalise education in the region.
“Teaching, like other professions, requires training and retraining. It goes beyond delivering lessons—it involves motivating, inspiring, careful planning, and mentoring students,” he said.
He urged participants to engage actively with the master trainers to achieve the workshop’s objectives.
Hajiya Falmata Muhammed, Director of Human Resource Management at the Yobe State Teachers’ Services Board, thanked the NEDC for organising the workshop.
“We are extremely happy for this opportunity and urge all participants to pay attention and maximise the benefits,” she said.
The training is expected to enhance teaching standards and improve learning outcomes in Yobe State and the broader Northeast region.
