By Baba Dan’iya
The Petroleum Environmental Solid Minerals Degradation Awareness Association (PESMDAA) on Tuesday in Damaturu inaugurated its new executive leadership in a ceremony that highlighted the urgent need to address environmental degradation and illegal mining activities across Nigeria.
Dr. Robert Adah, National Chairman of PESMDAA, represented by Engr. Muhammad Mustapha, described the event as “more than a ceremonial milestone” but a reaffirmation of the association’s commitment to national development.
He outlined several achievements including successful negotiations with the Association of Local Governments of Nigeria (ALGON) to introduce stipends and identification stamps for members across all 774 local government areas.
The association has also engaged in diplomatic visits to various embassies to forge partnerships on security and capacity building, while proposing a nationwide tree planting campaign to combat deforestation.
Engr. Mustapha emphasized PESMDAA’s role in supporting transparent revenue systems through compliance initiatives and local engagement.
Mr. Abdullahi Isyaku Guda, PESMDAA Commissioner in Yobe State, warned about the devastating consequences of environmental exploitation, including health hazards, biodiversity loss and economic damage.
“We must fight for transparency, accountability and every citizen’s right to a safe environment,” he declared.
The Yobe State Commissioner of Police, Mr. Emmanuel Ado, represented by Deputy Commissioner Sama’ila Saleh, stressed the importance of inter-agency collaboration.
He cited desertification as a major challenge contributing to crime and communal conflicts, while calling for better coordination with security agencies, especially regarding research activities in mining areas.
“The effects of environmental degradation transcend to all aspects of life,” DCP Saleh noted. “We must encourage tree planting in schools and homes to reclaim our environment.”
He advised researchers to always inform security agencies and traditional rulers before conducting fieldwork.
The ceremony concluded with a pledge from the new leadership to intensify advocacy for sustainable practices and environmental conservation.
“Let this day mark the beginning of stronger collective action for a just and sustainable future,” Engr. Mustapha stated.
The event was attended by representatives from government agencies, security forces, civil society organizations and the diplomatic community.
