The Women Development Association for Self Sustenance (WODASS), with support from WaterAid, has trained civil servants, partners, and contractors on health and safety practices in Bauchi State.

The training is aimed at boosting productivity and reducing workplace hazards across various sectors.

Speaking during the training session on Wednesday in Bauchi, Mr Musa Bulama, a representative of WaterAid, provided an overview of the initiative.

He emphasised that health and safety in the workplace are essential for protecting employees, enhancing productivity, and improving organisational performance.

Bulama noted that prioritising safety helps reduce workplace accidents and illnesses; ultimately lowering costs associated with healthcare, compensation, and lost man-hours.

“The training was organised to highlight the importance of health and safety.

“Beyond cost savings, it boosts employee morale and helps attract and retain skilled staff. A strong safety culture also reflects an organisation’s commitment to corporate social responsibility,” he said.

In a presentation on health and safety standards in Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene (WASH) projects, Mr Nicholas Afeso outlined key practices, including the use of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) and proper water handling.

He also highlighted the importance of waste disposal and hygiene promotion in ensuring safe and effective WASH project implementation.

He also stressed the importance of safe latrine construction and maintenance, chemical safety, worker training, risk assessment, and emergency preparedness.

Afeso highlighted the need for community engagement to broaden awareness of health and safety practices.

“These measures are crucial for minimising risks and ensuring safe environments for both workers and the communities they serve,” he stated.

In his remarks, Alhaji Samaila Tela, the Permanent Secretary of the Bauchi State Ministry of Water Resources, commended WODASS and WaterAid for their ongoing support in advancing development within the state.

He urged participants to take the training seriously and apply the knowledge gained.
“Preventing workplace accidents starts with knowledge.

“This training will help us safeguard lives, improve productivity, and promote sustainable development across all sectors,” Tela said.
