The Bauchi State Government has announced plans to strengthen tobacco control laws through a strategic partnership with the Civil Society Legislative Advocacy Centre (CISLAC) to curb tobacco use and protect public health.

The initiative, supported by the UN-backed Tobacco Tax in Africa Project, aims to reduce tobacco consumption, mitigate health risks, and address the environmental impact of smoking across communities in Bauchi State.

Key collaborators include the Ministries of Health and Social Welfare, and Housing and Environment, which pledged to work with CISLAC in designing and implementing effective tobacco control policies.

During an advocacy visit on Thursday in Bauchi, Housing and Environment Commissioner, Mr Danlami Kawule, commended CISLAC’s efforts and reaffirmed the state government’s commitment to reducing public smoking and protecting citizens’ health.

Kawule described tobacco use as both a health and environmental threat, calling for a public hearing involving traditional leaders, youth groups, and relevant agencies to strengthen legislation.

Also, Commissioner for Health and Social Welfare, Dr Sani Dambam, represented by Permanent Secretary, Alhaji Dauda Mahmoud, emphasised the urgent need to address tobacco-related diseases and promote healthier lifestyles.

He said the ministry remained committed to working with CISLAC to raise awareness, enforce regulations, and ensure that the people of Bauchi live healthier and tobacco-free lives.

CISLAC’s Senior Programme Officer, Mr Solomon Adoga, said the initiative, supported by the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation through Tax Justice Africa, sought to make tobacco products less affordable and accessible.

He noted that state-level participation was key to lasting impact, adding that Bauchi’s strong political will demonstrated genuine commitment to public health and sustainable tobacco regulation.

Mr Mohammed Murtala, CISLAC’s Senior Finance and Administration Officer, said ongoing advocacy would foster inter-agency collaboration and community participation in building a durable tobacco control framework for the state.
