The Nigerian Army Armour School (NAAS), Obienu Barracks, Bauchi, on Saturday hosted the combined end-of-year 2025 West African Social Activities (WASA) ceremony for the Headquarters Nigerian Army Armoured Corps, Nigerian Army Armour School and the 211 Demonstration Battalion, with a renewed call on officers and soldiers to remain professional and vigilant in the year 2026.

Delivering the welcome address, the Commandant of NAAS, Major General Umar B Abubakar, challenged personnel not to “rest on their oars,” stressing that the safety of the nation depends largely on their dedication, discipline and vigilance.

He commended officers and soldiers for their sacrifices, noting that while many Nigerians celebrate with their families, several troops continue to hold the line in difficult and dangerous environments across the country.

Maj. Gen. Abubakar said the WASA tradition remains a vital platform for officers, soldiers, their families and friends to interact in a relaxed atmosphere while reflecting on the achievements and challenges of the outgoing year.

He described 2025 as an eventful year for the Nigerian Army Armoured Corps, marked by notable operational successes in various theatres of operations.

According to him, other milestones recorded during the year included the successful hosting of the Combat Arms Training Week 2025, construction of 10 flats for transit officers, a 30-man accommodation for soldiers,

“The conduct of end-of-year training exercises that culminated in a combined arms exercise code-named Exercise MUGUN BUGU,” he said

He also noted that the Corps recorded a high number of promotions for both officers and soldiers in 2025.

The Commandant paid tribute to fallen heroes who lost their lives in the line of duty and prayed for the speedy recovery of wounded personnel, assuring families of continued support and improved welfare.

He highlighted ongoing welfare projects in the barracks, including solar-powered boreholes, improved power supply, upgraded medical services and enhanced facilities at the NAOWA School.

In his remarks, Bauchi State Governor, Bala Mohammed, represented by his Senior Special Assistant on Security, Sulaiman Jibrin, commended the Nigerian Army for its sustained efforts in maintaining peace and security in the state, while urging stronger inter-agency collaboration.

The event featured cultural displays, a tug-of-war competition, award presentations to outstanding personnel, and the ceremonial lowering of flags.

The ceremony concluded with a bonfire, symbolising unity and strengthening the bond among personnel and their families.
