The Chief of Army Staff (COAS), Lieutenant General Waidi Shaibu, has charged troops of the Nigerian Army to uphold professionalism, discipline and accountability in the discharge of their duties.

Shaibu gave the charge on Friday during an operational visit to the 33 Artillery Brigade, Shadawanka Barracks, Bauchi.

The brigade, a key formation under the 3 Division of the Nigerian Army, plays a strategic role in supporting military operations, particularly in counter-insurgency efforts and internal security across the North-East.

Addressing officers and soldiers, the COAS emphasised the importance of effectively applying acquired knowledge and capabilities in the field.

“You have been equipped with knowledge and capability, and it is important that you understand how to use them effectively. That must be clear to every one of you,” he said.

Shaibu urged the troops to take pride in their responsibilities, noting that their conduct must consistently reflect discipline, integrity and professionalism.

“Always evaluate your actions and ensure they align with your duties. Your documentation must be accurate, processes transparent and accountable,” he added.

The army chief commended personnel operating in remote and challenging environments, describing their commitment as commendable and worthy of emulation.

He also stressed the need for strict adherence to directives, while encouraging initiative where necessary, within the confines of military regulations.

Highlighting operational safety, Shaibu directed commanders at all levels to prioritise force protection, describing it as critical to mission success.

“I repeat force protection is critical in all operations,” he said.

The COAS further assured troops of continued efforts to improve their welfare, service conditions and operational support.

At the Nigerian Army Armoured Corps located at Obienu Barracks, he reiterated the army’s commitment to strengthening training and modernising equipment to enhance operational effectiveness.

The corps serves as a major hub for mechanised warfare training, including tank operations and combat tactics.

Shaibu reminded troops that they were better trained than the threats they face, urging them to remain alert, focused and mission-oriented.

“As we prepare for upcoming operations, ensure that you understand your roles clearly. This is not a time for inaction,” he said.

He urged personnel to remain committed and responsive to evolving security challenges, assuring that clear directives would continue to be communicated through the chain of command.
