Yobe Govt, ActionAid Unite for Cultural Revival, Peace Promotion
The Yobe State government, in partnership with ActionAid International, the World Food Programme, and German Cooperation, successfully hosted the inaugural Yobe State Cultural Summit on Thursday in Damaturu.
The summit, aimed at showcasing the state’s rich cultural heritage and promoting unity, was hailed by organizers as a significant step towards fostering peace and social cohesion.
Hajiya Husna Ibrahim, the Executive Director of the Yobe State Council for Arts and Culture, emphasized the importance of cultural heritage in societal development.
“We are here to showcase our cultural heritage and other artifacts.
“This is to tell the world that you cannot have any development without knowing your root, your identity, and your culture.” she said.
Ibrahim expressed gratitude to ActionAid International and other development partners for their support in promoting unity and oneness through cultural activities.
Andrew Mamedu, the ActionAid Country Director, highlighted the need for peace and social cohesion in the region, which has been affected by insurgency.
Mamedu, represented by Mr Kenneth Unuafe, the ActionAid Project Manager Yobe state stressed that the cultural summit provides an ideal platform to spread the message of peace and draw people together through their shared cultural heritage.
Brigadier General Dahiru Abdulsalam (rtd), the Special Assistant to Governor Mai Mala Buni on Security Matters, underscored the significance of cultural heritage.
He cautioned against the erosion of traditional values due to Western influences.
He urged people to embrace their cultural identity and avoid blindly copying foreign customs, particularly during weddings.
The summit featured a variety of cultural displays, including traditional dances, music among various cultural groups. It is hoped that the event will contribute to the ongoing efforts to rebuild and revitalize Yobe State.
