By Baba Dan’iya
The Northern Governors Forum has called on the National Assembly to enact legislation for the creation of state police as part of efforts to enhance security across the country.
This was contained in a communiqué issued at the end of the Forum’s meeting held on Saturday, and read by its Chairman, Gov. Muhammadu Inuwa Yahaya of Gombe State.
“The Forum resolved to support the creation of state police and called on the National Assembly to expedite action on the enactment of the legal framework for its take-off,” Yahaya said.
The governors also resolved to strengthen inter-state border surveillance to effectively tackle insurgency, banditry, and other forms of criminality within the region.
They expressed appreciation to the Federal Government for its continued efforts in addressing security challenges and infrastructural deficits across the country.
Furthermore, the Forum reiterated its commitment to enhanced synergy with the Nigeria Governors’ Forum in combating insecurity nationwide.
The meeting was attended by the 19 governors from the northern states as well as the state chairmen of traditional rulers.
