The re-elected Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Yobe, Sen. Amb. Umar El-Gash, says the party is confident of defeating the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) in the 2027 general elections.

El-Gash gave the assurance on Saturday in Damaturu shortly after his formal acceptance of a fresh mandate to lead the PDP in the state.

“We are very confident,” El-Gash said when asked about the party’s readiness to challenge the APC at the polls.

“Having won the last state elections, we believe that momentum is with us, and we are positioned to win not just at the presidential level but also across governorship and legislative elections.”

According to him, worsening security conditions, rising inflation, and economic hardship under the current administration have left Nigerians disillusioned and eager for change.

“The ruling APC has failed to meet the expectations it set during its campaign,” he said.

“People are struggling. Many can barely afford two meals a day. Nigerians are not naïve—they are watching closely and waiting for the next opportunity to make a decisive change.”

El-Gash, who described his re-election as “a collective affirmation” of the people’s faith in the PDP, thanked party members for their loyalty and commitment.

“This moment is not just about my personal victory, but a collective affirmation of our shared commitment to revive, rebuild, and reposition our great party as the beacon of hope for the good people of Yobe State,” he said.

He noted that the party made history in 2023 by winning the presidential vote in Yobe for the first time and securing representation at both national and state assembly levels.

“This could not have been possible without your unwavering support and commitment,” he said.

He praised the national leadership of the PDP under Amb. Umar Iliya Damagum for what he described as tireless efforts to unite the party and provide a credible alternative to Nigerians.

El-Gash pledged loyalty to Damagum and reiterated the party’s resolve to serve as “the voice of the voiceless and the shield for the vulnerable.”

“Fellow party members, this is the time for renewal – not just of leadership, but of vision and action. The PDP in Yobe is not merely an opposition party. We are the alternative that Yobe deserves,” he said.

Responding to questions on what the PDP would do differently if returned to power, El-Gash urged Nigerians to compare the present economic realities with the era of PDP rule.

“The difference will be clear,” he said. “The APC government has been in power for several years, yet the challenges facing the country have only deepened.”

He also assessed the APC’s performance in infrastructure and development, describing it as underwhelming compared to previous PDP administrations.

“Anyone who travels across the country—especially to places like Borno and other states—can make an informed judgement.

“When you compare the achievements of the PDP in areas such as infrastructure and education to what we see now, the difference is glaring,”he said.

El-Gash called on party members to remain united, promising an inclusive administration that will reawaken grassroots structures, empower women and youths, and promote fairness.

“Our doors will remain open, our ears attentive, and our hearts committed to fairness and inclusion,” he said.
