Prioritise Children’s Welfare, Education, Skill Development — NOA Urges Parents
By Ahmed I Abba
The National Orientation Agency (NOA), Yobe State Directorate, has urged parents and guardians to prioritise the protection, education, and skill development of children as a fundamental responsibility towards nation-building.
The call was made by the Acting State Director of NOA, Alhaji Muhammad Ali Tikau, during an event to mark the 2025 World Children’s Day celebration in Damaturu.
Tikau said the protection of children is not only a moral obligation but a critical component of fundamental human rights, adding that children are entitled to specific protections and freedoms due to their vulnerability and developmental needs.
He cited the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child (UNCRC), adopted in 1989, which mandates the global community to safeguard children’s rights and guarantee their wellbeing.
“Every child deserves equal rights, regardless of race, gender, disability, or the economic status of their parents. It is our collective duty as a society to ensure that children are protected from harm and provided with the opportunities they need to thrive,” Tikau said.
The director commended Gov. Mai Mala Buni for his administration’s commitment to child welfare, particularly the enactment of the Child Rights Protection and Violence Against Persons Prohibition (VAPP) Law.
He said the law was a significant milestone that underscores the Yobe Government’s resolve to protect children from all forms of abuse, exploitation and neglect.
“This law is a significant step forward in ensuring that children in Yobe State are protected, nurtured, and given the opportunity to grow in a safe and supportive environment.
“I urge parents and guardians to make good use of this gesture by actively supporting their children’s education, skill development, and overall wellbeing,” Tikau said.
He emphasised the importance of education and vocational training as tools for empowering children to become responsible and productive citizens.
According to him, families must rise to the responsibility of equipping children with the knowledge and skills necessary to navigate the complexities of the modern world.
The theme of this year’s celebration, “Enhance the Total Wellbeing of the Child through Quality Education and Skill Development,” reflects the global call for governments, families and communities to work together in ensuring the holistic development of children.
