Senator Ndume Raises Alarm over Food Scarcity, Calls for Urgent Action
The Senate Chief Whip, Ali Ndume, has expressed concern over the rising number of Nigerian children dying due to food scarcity in the country.
In an interview with BBC Hausa on Tuesday, Ndume attributed the problem to the Federal Government’s failure to address the rising cost of living and food scarcity.
The senator, who represents Borno South Senatorial District under the All Progressives Congress (APC), urged President Bola Tinubu to take urgent action to address the situation.
Ndume cited the example of Katsina State, where children are suffering from malnutrition due to food scarcity, and the situation in Niger Republic and South Sudan, where children are dying due to hunger.
He attributed the problem to the closed-door policy of the President, which has denied ministers and National Assembly members the opportunity to discuss issues affecting their constituencies.
Ndume and Senator Sunday Karimi sponsored a motion to address the food crisis, noting that the World Food Programme has warned that 82 million Nigerians may face food insecurity in the next five years.
The Federal Government has recently announced a 150-day duty-free import window for food commodities to tackle rising inflation, which has impoverished many Nigerians.
